Independence Day Aug 31 for all

Sarawak achieved independence on 22 July 1963 but may be persuaded to celebrate its independence day on Aug 31 as well.

KUCHING: The National Day in future would be simply called Independence Day Aug 31 without mentioning the anniversary year since the peninsula and Sabah achieved independence in different years, 1957 and 1963 respectively.

Sarawak achieved independence on 22 July 1963 but may be persuaded to celebrate its independence day on Aug 31 as well.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek, who revealed this in Kuching yesterday after paying a courtesy call on Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem, said the proposal was awaiting Federal Cabinet approval.

“If the anniversary year is mentioned, it will sideline Sabah and Sarawak as both states only gained independence in 1963,” said Ahmad Shabery. “It makes the anniversary year irrelevant.”

He hopes that the initiative, i.e. not to mention the anniversary year, will help stop people in Sabah and Sarawak thinking that their history was being distorted.

Malaysia Day will be celebrated on Sept 16 in Miri, according to Ahmad Shabery, the theme being “Malaysia Disini Lahirnya Sebuah Cinta’.

Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, Governor Abdul Taib Mahmud, Adenan and Sabah Chief Minister Musa Aman will grace the function.

Ahmad Shabery did not explain why the states in the peninsula are not participating in the Malaysia Day joy.
