Will Sedition Act be used against activists in Borneo?

Baru Bian tells Najib to start behaving like the PM for all and show some real leadership if he’s serious about 1Malaysia.

KUCHING: The lame statement from the Prime Minister’s office that sedition charges are a “court-matter” and have nothing to do with the government was met with sarcasm and incredulity.

Pakatan Rakyat Sarawak chief Baru Bian in a statement said the PM and his officers, should give the citizens some credit for intelligence and think carefully “before feeding us with such inane excuses.”

Baru Bian said Najib only said all the right things when he was reading from a prepared script.

“The relentless charging of opposition politicians and even academics for sedition during the past few weeks suggests a crackdown by the government against voices of dissent, reminiscent of Ops Lalang,” said Baru who is also the Ba’ Kelalan assemblyman.

He wants to know why the authorities are still laying charges under the outdated Sedition Act if it was supposed to be repealed as Najib pledged during an interview with BBC in London last year.

“This land (Borneo) is our land and we will not be bullied by ignorant racists and bigots,” warned Baru in reference to “Malay/Islamic supremacist groups training their sights on the Borneo states” and the possibility of rights activists in Sabah and Sarawak being hauled in under the Sedition Act for airing the grouses of the people.

The people of Sabah and Sarawak have been marginalised and disenfranchised for decades, he continued, and “do we and the non-Malays in the peninsula now have to put up with insults from people who have benefited from our sacrifices?”

He called on Najib to start behaving like the PM for all and show some real leadership if he was serious about 1Malaysia.

“It is as clear as day that the authorities are practising selective persecution. The PM chooses to remain silent on inflammatory and divisive matters,” said Baru.
